The team behind the new Escape From New York movie just shared a new update on the upcoming project, dropping a confirmation that it will not be a reboot as previously rumoured but a requel. The Radio Silence directors Tyler Gillett and Matt Bettinelli-Olpin spoke about their plans for the requel movie in a recent interview with our friends over at ComicBook.
When asked if the idea is to make the movie a requel, the filmmakers responded with the following comments:
“It’s a great question. I don’t think we know enough about the movie yet to be able to say anything, but yes ‘requel’ is the idea,” the directors shared with the website.
On Kurt Russell’s return as Snake:
“There’s no way to remake how great that movie is, would be a fool’s errand to try. So, you know, we’ll try to borrow what we love from it and find a new way to put the package together.“
Whether or not series creator John Carpenter will have any involvement in the new project is currently unknown.
It’s not exactly a straight-up answer, but we have been told by our sources that Kurt Russell will be back in the iconic role of Snake Plissken. Keeping our fingers tightly crossed that an official statement will be released about it in the coming weeks.
