With the half way point to Halloween fast approaching, we thought it would be fun to recommend some of the best Genesis horror games to play during the spooky season.

Here is our list 10 recommended games in a random order.

1. Splatterhouse 2

It’s not often we get a sequel that’s almost as good as the first game. In the case of Splattethouse 2, we believe that sentiment to be true. Namco’s exclusive Sega Genesis follow-up game to the original Splattethouse implements all the ingredients that made the first game an horrifying visual experience. An absolute banger for an Halloween evening gaming session.

2. Splatterhouse 3

The third game in the Splatterhouse series changes things up a quite bit from the two previous installments. This time around, the game incorporates beat ’em up elements in very much the style of the Double Dragon games. You can also move Rick up and down the screen while exploring the West Mansion. Horror fans will enjoy this game for sure.

3. Castlevania: Bloodlines

If you enjoyed Super Castlevania IV on the Super Nintendo, you should probably really check out Castlevania: Bloodlines on the Sega Genesis / Mega Drive as well. In this game, you get to select from one of two protagonist characters, John Morris and Eric Lecarde. The game itself features some rather eerie backgrounds and ghoulish enemies throughout.

4. Zombies Ate My Neighbors

Easily one of the best genesis shmups packed with tons of horror elements, Zombies Ate My Neighbors is the perfect experience during the Halloween season. Make sure you watch out for all those pesky zombies and chainsaw-wielding, hockey mask wearing, Jason Voorhees type characters lurking around the bushes. Has it’s fair sure of jump scares.

5. Alien 3

Alien 3 is another suitable title for horror fans who are looking for something with an eerie atmosphere. Just like in the series of film, Ripley must blast her way through hordes of alien invaders in the hope of surviving these relentless creatures. One of the toughest video games in existence, but not enough to stop you from having a fun time.

6. Haunting

Hunting is quite a unique little title, where the aim of the game is to use Polterguy to haunt and scare the residents away from their own house. You will probably find yourself laughing your ass off at times while playing through this comedy-horror based game. A unique concept many retro gaming enthusiasts will surely enjoy. Definitely give it a shot.

7. Altered Beast

Anyone who plays retro video games will probably know about Sega’s classic Altered Beast. This game has all the elements of a creature-feature horror movie. Each stage of the game you will a get a chance to play as a weredragon, a werebear, a weretiger, a werewolf, or a golden werewolf by collecting three spirit balls. Best plated simultaneously with a friend.

8. Golden Axe

Sega’s Golden Axe is filled with all kinds of hideous creatures and giant end of level bosses. The Sega Genesis version brings all the battle action of the classic arcade machine to the 16-bit system. If you have a second controller, why not hook it up and invite a friend over for a two player scare fest? Turn the lights out for a better gameplay experience.

9. Golden Axe 2

If you thought the creatures in the first Golden Axe were menacing, wait until you bump into the sea of bizarre monsters Golden Axe 2 has to offer. The backgrounds are quite eerie, and the character sprites are large and impressive. Just like the first game, we recommend playing with a friend to get the most out of this epic sequel.

10. Ghouls ‘n Ghosts

The perfect game to play on Halloween night. Capcom’s Ghouls ‘n Ghosts on the Sega Genesis will probably send some chills down your spine during some key points in the game. One thing we must warn you about is the games difficulty level, because a lot of skill is required to make it past all the monster packed stages to reach the end.
