So, let’s begin this numbered list of retro video gaming fun then, shall we?

1. Contra: Hard Corps:

First up, we have to start with Contra: Hard Corps. If you love Contra III on the SNES, the Genesis game has more of the same great shoot ’em up action. If you enjoyed what Contra III on the Super Nintendo had to offer, you will probably find that this game is just as much fun as its predecessor. Brilliant game with some of the best graphics ever seen on the console.

2. RoboCop Versus The Terminator:

Next up, we have one of the best Sega Genesis game on this list. Fans of action games in the form of platform shooters will enjoy this one immensely. If you like games with a lot of exsplovie gore effects, then RoboCop Versus The Terminator will be right up your alley. Those with a weak stomach might want to stay clear from this one.

3. Forgotten Worlds:

A great conversion of the hit arcade game made its way onto the Sega Genesis in 1998 from the almighty Capcom. You should definitely check out Forgotten Worlds if you still own a console to play it on. It’s a game that’s instantly recognisable for its unique looking stage graphics and flying character sprites. Definitely give it a play if you can.

4. Sagaia:

Originally released and titled as Darius II in arcades in 1989, Sagaia was later released on the Genesis console in 1991. Many gamers highly recommend this port of Taito’s arcade style space shooter on the Genesis. Features some fantastic graphics and enough hectic looking blasting action to keep you entertained for a few hours.

5. After Burner:

Sega’s iconic flying action shooter debuted in arcade in 1987 before making its way onto the Genesis later that same year. You simply must give this brilliant console conversion of the arcade game a play. After Burner isn’t the easiest of games to get the hang of, but once you pick it up, you will definitely have a blast with this one. Among the best genesis shmups out there.

6. Rocket Knight Adventures:

One of the most superb platform shooters to ever grace the Sega Genesis. Rocket Knight Adventures will keep you coming back time and time again for more of what it has to offer. For a 1993 game, the sprites and stage backgrounds are quite impressive to look at. A very colourful, fun action blaster that every lover of shmups should play at some point.

7. Ghoul Patrol:

The sequel to the classic horror video game Zombies Ate my Neighbours, Ghoul Patrol doubles up on the gameplay and graphics of the original. Horror lovers will get the most fun most of these types of shooters. Again, it’s obviously one of those games that must be experienced in two players mode for the ultimate fun time.

8. Eswat:

Another epic port of the excellent arcade game for the Sega Genesis console. Eswat is an action-packed shooter with plenty replay value, deserving of being on a best genesis shmups top list. I have always had a soft spot for this awesome game over the years. If you enjoy games such as the original Robocop, then do yourself a favour and check out Sega’s Eswat.

9. Earthworm Jim:

Brilliant graphics, awesome tunes, and excellent playability make Earthworm Jim a must for retro video game fans who are looking for something with a little character. There’s been a long debate between Super Nintendo and Genesis fans on which port of the game is better on those consoles. You can’t go wrong with the Genesis version.

10. Alien 3:

Fans of the movie will find this one enjoyable. Alien 3 basically features everything you would expect from a video game adaption of the movie. Prepare for some very challenging gameplay. There’s plenty of alien carnage throughout each stage to keep you entertained. Some might find the difficulty level a little too much.

11. Sunset Riders:

It wouldn’t be a proper list without the inclusion of Sunset Riders. The Sega Genesis port received a fair score rating when released on the console back in 1991. It has to be noted that the game still gets a lot of praise from many retro video gamers to this day. I would imagine a two player game would probably be the most fun to be had from the game.

12. Smash TV:

Easily one of the most fun and enjoyable shmups on the Sega Genesis / Mega Drive console. Smash TV is definitely one of the all-time greats in terms of chaotic action and non-stop enemy blasting. Just remember sure to keep moving while shooting. Once you start playing, you will probably find it incredibly hard to put down the control pad.

13. Alien Storm:

Sega’s beat ’em up style blaster is one of those games that is expected on a Genesis list of this kind. This stylish port of the popular arcade shoot ’em up game looks the part on the console. Featuring large chunky sprites, unique looking boss creatures, and a whole lot of other cool things. Most fun will obviously be had while playing with a friend in two player mode.

14. Strider:

One of the most memorable games on the Sega Genesis console for sure. Originally released in Arcades in 1989, Capcom ported over a super cool version of the game shortly after. As you make progress through it, you will soon appreciate how well the game performs on the console. Superb graphics and gameplay to match. A must-play.

15. Zombies Ate My Neighbors:

Another quality shooter for the Sega Genesis, only this time you blast zombies. One of Konami’s all-time popular games is basically a horror movie on a cartridge. Fans of classic zombie movies will absolutely love the crazy antics of Zombies Ate My Neighbors. If you have a friend to play along side you, it’s definitely the best way to enjoy it.

16 Robocop 3:

You can’t have a shoot ’em up list without solo including a Robocop game for the Sega Genesis / Mega Drive. Robocop 3 has all the action gameplay of an Arcade style game. Also features some decent music, graphics, and end of level bosses to keep you interested enough throughout. Grab a copy on eBay if you don’t already have it at hand.

17. Quack Shot:

We have to include Quack Shot on this list as it passes as a shoot ’em up and platform-adventure game in one. It’s mighty fine game for the Sega Genesis / Mega Drive. You play as Donald Duck, who is equipped with a special gun that shoots plungers to defeat enemies and climb to higher levels of a stage. You must check this one out for sure.

18. Desert Strike:

Desert Strike was popular enough to be ported to a number of video game consoles and home computer systems during the during the early nineties. The game was super popular back then and was a huge success for Electronic Arts. If you don’t already own a copy of one of the best genesis shmups, we would recommend tracking it down immediately.

19. Altered Beast:

One of Sega’s most recognisable games. Some hate it, some love it. The Sega Genesis / Mega Drive port of the arcade game almost perfectly captures the look and feel on the 16-bit system. Not considered a pure shoot ’em up, but it does have its fair share of blasting action throughout. Such a fun game to play with two players simultaneously.

20. Revenge of Shinobi:

When to comes to our favorite titles on the Sega Genesis / Mega Drive, Revenge of Shinobi will always be up there at the very top among some of the greatest video games. I remember playing it for hours on end back when I first got my copy. It still holds up rather well to this very day. Throwing shurikens at oncoming enemies is super satisfying.
